As part of Slovenia’s presidency of the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) Initiative, a ministerial meeting of CEDC countries and partners from the Western Balkans took place on September 21 and 22, 2026.

State Secretary Tamara Weingerl Požar attended the regular meeting of the EU General Affairs Council (GAC) in Brussels. Ministers and state secretaries responsible for European affairs held a policy debate on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034 and started preparations for the October European Council. They also discussed legislative packages on simplification and legislative planning, and held the annual rule of law dialogue.

On 22 September 2026, the Minister of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development, Dr Monika Kirbiš Rojs, and the Mayor of the Urban Municipality of Ptuj, Nuša Gajšek, signed the agreement for the free transfer of state property to the Urban Municipality of Ptuj. The transfer of the land is an important step toward carrying out the planned extension and providing additional space for primary healthcare services.

The Interreg Programme Slovenia-Croatia marked the 2026 edition of the Interreg Cooperation Day in Zavrč, bringing together around 140 participants, including 70 children from both Slovenia and Croatia. The event opened with welcome remarks from Dr Monika Kirbiš Rojs, Minister for Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development, Suzana Lep Šimenko, Minister for Relations between the Republic of Slovenia and the Autochthonous Slovenian National Community in Neighbouring Countries, and between the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenians, and Nataša Mikuš Žigman, Minister for Regional Development and EU Funds from the Republic of Croatia.

Franci Matoz, the Minister of the Interior and Public Administration, attended a trilateral meeting in Pordenone with Matteo Piantedosi, the Italian Minister of the Interior, and Dr Davor Božinović, the Croatian Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia and Minister of the Interior.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for two projects: hydraulic improvements to the water supply system and construction of water supply pipelines for the drinking water supply in the municipalities of Mirna Peč, Žužemberk and Dolenjske Toplice, and hydraulic improvements to the Lower Savinja Valley water supply system. The projects will receive a total of more than €6.6 million in EU funding.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for a project aimed at improving the conservation status of species and habitat types in Natura 2000 areas within the Triglav National Park. The project will receive over €1.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

State Secretary Dr Božo Predalič attended a high-level conference in Brussels on reducing administrative burden. At the conference, he presented Slovenia’s approach to reducing bureaucracy. Representatives of the participating countries signed a declaration forming an alliance, committing to closer cooperation in creating a simpler, more effective regulation.

In cooperation with the European Commission, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs hosted a meeting of the EU Ministries of Foreign Affairs Science Diplomacy and Advice Network (EMFASDAN). Representatives from EU Member States, the European Commission, UNESCO and other partners discussed the further development of science diplomacy, exchanging national experiences and best practices.

On September 20, we marked the 110th anniversary of the Slovenian Church in New York. In 1916, Slovenian immigrants established a Slovenian parish in a building on St. Mark’s Place. It soon became an important religious, cultural, and social center. For many Slovenians, it was their first point of support upon arriving in their new surroundings, while also providing the community with opportunities to maintain religious and cultural life in the Slovenian language.

Ambassador Iztok Mirošič and Minister for Slovenians Abroad Suzana Lep Šimenko concluded their visit to the United States with visits to Slovenian communities in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on September 18, followed by New York on September 19 and 20.

On 15 – 17 September 2026, the Slovenian delegation participated in the informal meeting of chief veterinary officers (CVOs) of the EU Member States in Kilkenny, Ireland. Held under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the meeting focused on current challenges in animal health and welfare, biosecurity and preparedness for cross-border risks.

Minister Tone Kajzer, accompanied by Defence Minister Valentin Hajdinjak, met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy immediately upon arriving at the Kyiv railway station, and later held meetings with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Deputy Prime Minister Vsevolod Chentsov.

The 11th Mediterranean Coast and Macro-Regional Strategies Week, which took place in Izola between 15 and 17 September 2026, brought together nearly 200 representatives from 17 European countries. The three-day discussions showed that Europe can address common challenges effectively only through stronger cooperation, coordinated investment and concrete cross-border projects.

At today’s session, the Government discussed a number of important issues relating to Slovenia’s development and security. Among other things, it adopted a proposal for the Act on the Public Fund for Advanced Treatment of Rare Diseases and measures to ease the pressure on retail fuel prices.

Prime Minister Janez Janša attended the official opening of the 58th International Trade and Business Fair (MOS) in Celje today. In his speech at the opening ceremony, he emphasised that, to accelerate development, Slovenia needs a more competitive and predictable business environment, a more efficient public sector and an education system that better responds to the needs of modern society and the economy.

Today, 16 September 2026, Minister of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development Dr Monika Kirbiš Rojs and Mayor of the Municipality of Ajdovščina Tadej Beočanin signed an agreement on the free-of-charge transfer of land for the construction of a new healthcare centre, as well as an agreement on the free-of-charge transfer of the Residential Care Home to the Municipality of Ajdovščina.

Acting Director-General for International Law and Multilateral Affairs Anita Pipan presented Slovenia's priorities for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and the Slovenian delegation to the diplomatic corps.

Denis Zobarič, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration, attended the Berlin Process Interior Ministers' Meeting in Podgorica. Participants discussed ways to strengthen regional cooperation and resilience against organised crime, border management, and the fight against hybrid threats and irregular migration.

We are marking the International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South to emphasise the importance of knowledge, scientific and technological progress and innovation for the sustainable development of the countries in the Global South. In 2024, the UN General Assembly declared the day with Resolution 78/259, highlighting the significance of international cooperation in strengthening the scientific, technological and innovative capacities of developing countries.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Equipping the 2019 Kranj agglomeration. The project will receive almost €8 million from the Cohesion Fund.

UNESCO’s designation of 13 September as the International Day of Caves and Karst is a remarkable diplomatic achievement for Slovenia. It is the result of a successful diplomatic campaign spanning several years and a testament to the excellence of Slovenian karstology. The campaign was also a success thanks to the many years of outstanding work carried out by Slovenian scientists researching and protecting caves, karst and related phenomena.

During the Government's first 100 days, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has guided foreign policy according to the principle of "diplomacy in the service of the people". The focus has been on providing practical assistance to Slovenian citizens abroad, strengthening relations with neighbouring countries, creating new opportunities for the Slovenian economy and representing Slovenia's interests more actively both in Europe and around the world.

Tone Kajzer, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, made his first visit to the Vatican, where he met with senior representatives of the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta. The 2026 Environmental Performance Review of Slovenia, an independent assessment of progress made by Slovenia in environmental and climate policy, notes progress in several areas while also pointing to a number of gaps in areas such as pressures on biodiversity, delays in expanding municipal wastewater discharge and treatment systems, the need for faster emissions reduction and the gap between the targets adopted and their implementation.

At today's session, the Government took note of the Autumn Forecast of Economic Trends and adopted the revised budget for this year, as well as an intervention act to improve the efficiency of long-term care provision, which will also allow for greater flexibility in the provision of services to users.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the Dry Retention Reservoir project, which will help improve flood safety and create new green spaces in Metlika. The project will receive nearly €700,00 from the European Regional Development Fund.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for an electric bus charging station in Maribor, implemented under the Integrated Territorial Investment mechanism supporting urban development. The project will receive just over €1.85 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for a project supporting the redevelopment of green spaces in the Municipality of Hajdina. The redevelopment of a 1.7-hectare public space will enhance green infrastructure in the centre of the town, creating a more attractive environment and better opportunities for outdoor recreation. The project will receive €204,000 from the European Regional Development Fund.

Following today's Government session, at which the Government approved the draft revised state budget for 2026, Prime Minister Janez Janša presented the key findings from the Government's first 100 days in office.

State Secretary Rok Šimenc participated in the 6th international development conference Welcome Future – Cities in Motion which was held in Velenje. The conference brough together representatives of local governments and business community, researchers and academics as well as representatives of national and EU institutions to discuss ways to unlock new development opportunities for cities undergoing economic, energy and social transformation.

As of this year this year, 13 September is observed as International Caves and Karst Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference on 12 November 2025. Slovenia will mark the first International Caves and Karst Day in Postojna, home to the International Union of Speleology. The day aims to raise awareness of the importance of caves and karst, promote research and education and encourage efforts to protect them.

Initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, the International Space Summit brought together representatives of governments, international organisations, space agencies, academia and industry to discuss the future of the space sector and its role in addressing technological, economic, security and environmental challenges. Minister Anže Logar also attended the Summit.

Tone Kajzer, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, hosted Gideon Sa'ar, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs. This is the first visit to Slovenia by an Israeli foreign minister at this level in 16 years and reflects a renewed impetus for political and economic cooperation. The two ministers also signed the 2026–2030 Programme of Cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture, youth and sport.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is conducting a survey on the implementation and use of Maritime Single Window (MSW) systems, which are intended to simplify and digitalize the exchange of information between ships, ports, and competent authorities.

Minister Dr Monika Kirbiš Rojs and State Secretary Rok Šimenc attended the 12th regular meeting of the Development Council of the Zahodna Slovenija Cohesion Region today at the Rog Centre in Ljubljana. Council members discussed implementing the Agreements on the Development of Regions for 2021-2027, future directions for regional development, and preparations for the new 2028-2034 funding period.

The Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Borut Rončević, announced a comprehensive reform of the Slovenian education system during the presentation of the results of the PISA 2025 international survey. Fifteen-year-olds in Slovenia achieved their worst results in all three domains assessed – reading, mathematical and scientific literacy – since Slovenia has become a PISA participant.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Arrangement of the Ljubljanska ulica Street in Maribor. The investment will improve the conditions for sustainable mobility and enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The project will receive €1.74 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Prime Minister Janez Janša today hosted European Council President António Costa at Brdo pri Kranju. The main topic of discussion was the European Union's next multiannual financial framework.

Tone Kajzer, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, hosted a visit by his Croatian counterpart, Gordan Grlić Radman. At today’s session, the Government restored fairer conditions for awarding Zois scholarships, approved a proposal for amendments to the Excise Duty Act aimed at mitigating the impact of high energy prices on households and businesses, and concluded that Slovenia needs a more balanced and resilient energy policy.

Minister Tone Kajzer participated in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Wicklow, Ireland. Hosted by the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee, the meeting focused on Russian aggression against Ukraine, the strengthening of the EU’s external action and the situation in the Middle East.

Addressing the 21st Forum of Craft and Small Business organised by the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, Prime Minister Janez Janša said that the economy is one of the key factors underpinning Slovenia's stability and an important reason why the country has maintained a relatively high level of prosperity despite numerous upheavals.

State Secretary Stanislav Raščan took part in a panel discussion at the 21st Bled Strategic Forum about economic cooperation between Europe and India. He also held several bilateral meetings.

Minister of health Tadej Ostrc attended the Bled Strategic Forum, where he participated in a roundtable discussion on the future of European health care systems and access to innovative medicines.

The Archivalia of the Month section features the Archivalia of the month of September, which is dedicated to the development of the institutionalized conservation-restoration service for archival records in Slovenia. The story dates back to 1956, when the foundations of this discipline were laid at the former Museum of the National Liberation in Ljubljana. Following its merger with the National Archives in 1980, the department developed into the country's central restoration workshop for paper and parchment.

The meetings focused on exchanging views on current European and international challenges and on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Today, Prime Minister Janez Janša attended the opening of the fully renovated Turjak Castle, one of the most important monuments of Slovenian cultural and historical heritage.

At the 30th Conference of Slovenian Ambassadors and on the 35th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence, Tone Kajzer, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, presented recognition awards to the Republic of Slovenia’s earliest representatives. These individuals had represented our country abroad even before it gained international recognition. Minister Kajzer thanked them for their role during one of the most crucial periods in Slovenia’s history as a state.

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has nominated Prof. Dr Verica Trstenjak as a candidate for the office of European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, for the period from 1 September 2026 to 29 February 2028, and has instructed the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to announce the nomination and take all necessary steps to secure support for it.

Tone Kajzer, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, is hosting the 30th Conference of Slovenian Ambassadors in Brdo pri Kranju. The two-day conference focuses on security, Slovenia’s position within the EU and economic diplomacy. Minister Kajzer’s key message is that diplomacy must represent Slovenia’s interests, open doors for the economy and serve Slovenian citizens.

At today's session, the Government issued the Decree on the mandatory contribution for the promotion of agricultural and food products in the fruit sector for 2027–2029 and the amendment to the Decree on healthcare service programmes for 2026. At the same time, the Government included two new investment projects for the Employment Service of Slovenia in the 2026–2029 Development Programmes Plan.

Minister for Slovenians Abroad, Suzana Lep Šimenko, will participate as a guest of honor at a literary evening celebrating the 120th Anniversary of the Slovenian Reading Society in Cleveland.

Franci Matoz, Minister of the Interior and Public Administration, met with Ivica Dačić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia, in Belgrade today. They discussed cooperation in the field of internal security, the management of migration flows, the fight against organised crime and ways to further deepen police cooperation between the two countries.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Policy has approved EU funding for street redesign projects in Maribor and Koper. The projects will be implemented under the Integrated Territorial Investments mechanism which supports integrated urban development. They will help improve road safety, promote sustainable mobility and contribute to the redevelopment of public space. The projects will receive €4.56 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The 64th International Agri-Food Agra Fair in Gornja Radgona hosted Veterinary Day on 24 August. The expert conference, organised by the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection, focused on the latest developments in animal health and welfare and other current issues in the veterinary sector.

Prime Minister Janez Janša attended a meeting of the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing via video link on Monday, 24 August 2026. The event was held on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day. The aim of the meeting was to mark the occasion, reaffirm the allies' unwavering support and identify urgent priorities.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for a project aimed at upgrading the national research infrastructure (RIUM 2). The project will receive over €17 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

World Humanitarian Day, celebrated on 19 August, provides an opportunity to honour humanitarian workers and show solidarity with people around the world whose lives are affected by humanitarian crises. On 19 August 2003, 22 humanitarian workers were killed in a bomb attack in Iraq. Five years later, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 63/139, designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day.

Presented below are the results of the measures for the greening of public education infrastructure.

To mark the national holiday commemorating the incorporation of Prekmurje and the reunification of the Prekmurje Slovenians with their mother nation, State Secretary Dr Stanislav Raščan attended the main ceremony in Velika Polana, which took place on the eve of the holiday. Prior to this, he attended a ceremony and wreath-laying at the monument to the national revivalist Jožef Klekl in Črenšovci.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the project Restoration and establishment of habitat types and improvement of habitats for selected species at Lake Cerknica, the Javorniki Mountains, the Planinsko polje Plateau and Nanoščica, with the acronym REVITA 2. The project will receive just over €2.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The Ministry of Local Self-Government, Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for a project supporting the development of a new cycling route in the Municipality of Kočevje. The project will receive over €1 million from the Cohesion Fund.
