Slovenia takes up non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council
On 1 January 2024, Slovenia becomes a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the second time in its history. Following its successful election by an overwhelming majority of 153 votes, and after three months as an observer, Slovenia will participate in decisions to maintain international peace and security during the 2024–2025 term. It will act in an inclusive and responsible manner, committed to the principles of the UN Charter, international law and human rights.

The Republic of Slovenia issued an open call for the 2024 Golden Bee Award
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food has issued an open call to citizens, legal persons or other organisations for the identification of candidates for the 2024 Golden Bee Award. The call is open till 15th March 2024 and applications from Slovenia and abroad are expected. The subject of the call are projects or achievements in promotion of bees and other pollinators in the past seven years (i.e. in the period 2016–2023).

20 December marks the 6th anniversary of the proclamation of World Bee Day in the UN
On 20 December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly in New York unanimously adopted a resolution proclaiming 20 May as World Bee Day. The aim of the initiative is to further raise awareness among the international public regarding the importance of bee preservation and to remind everyone that we heavily depend on bees and other pollinators. They are invaluable in economic, social and environmental terms.

The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved EU funding for the strategic project Centre for Demonstration and Training in Zero Carbon Technologies. ''This project is identified in the Territorial Just Transition Plan for the Zasavje coal region as one of the flagship projects of the Just Transition Fund with the objective of investing in growth and jobs,'' said Minister Jevšek.

Internal border checks extended until June 2024
The temporary border controls on Slovenia’s internal borders with Croatia and Hungary will continue for another six months, from 22 December 2023 until 22 June 2024. The internal border checks are being extended under Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code.

Interregional cooperation Danube–Black Sea–Mediterranean launched at the initiative of Slovenia
In assuming the Presidency of the Barcelona Convention, Slovenia has also succeeded in implementing an initiative for interregional integration of monitoring of the major ecosystems of the Danube, Black Sea and Mediterranean, with the aim of reducing negative effects on the world's most international river basin. The work programmes for individual sites were already agreed on the margins of the Barcelona Convention in Portorož, and the cooperation was formally confirmed at the meeting of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in Vienna last week.

Minister Fajon: In 2023, Slovenian diplomats have shown the right attitude and ability
Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon opened the 27th Consultation of Slovenian Diplomats at Brdo pri Kranju. In her address, she presented some reflections on the year that is coming to an end and spoke about the challenges ahead. She went on to express her sincere appreciation to the Slovenian diplomatic corps for its contribution to the strengthening of the Slovenian diplomatic service and Slovenia's role in the changed geopolitical reality.

Just Transition Fund – a new instrument of the 2021-2027 programming period
A press conference on the funding opportunities and the use of the funding made available under the Just Transition Fund was held in Velenje today. The Just Transition Fund (JTF) is a novelty of the 2021-2027 programming period. Two Slovenian coal regions are eligible for funding under this instrument, i.e., Savinjsko-Šaleška region and Zasavje region. The JTF aims to support the restructuring and diversification of the local economy to alleviate the impact of the regions’ coal phase-out as part of the transition towards climate neutrality.

Slovenia accepts refugees under the resettlement project
Four Syrian families and one individual have arrived in Slovenia from Türkiye, having been selected and accepted as part of the resettlement project. Resettlement is a way of providing legal routes to Europe for people in need of protection.

Agreement with the European Patent Office brings lower fees for prior art searches
The European Patent Office and the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office have signed an administrative agreement which will provide financial support to certain national patent applicants and Slovenian patent holders in the form of a reduction in the fee for searches to be carried out by the European Patent Office under the working agreement signed on 4 September this year.

Slovenia receives EUR 24 million for REPowerEU measures
Today, Slovenia received an advance of EUR 24 million of EU funds under the Recovery and Resilience Plan for the implementation of REPowerEU measures to reduce the dependence on Russian energy products and accelerate the green transition. In total, EUR 122 million is available to Slovenia for this purpose. It will receive the remaining funds when it meets the milestones and targets of the planned measures.

Agriculture and fisheries council on new genomic techniques and labelling honey blends
The last Agriculture and Fisheries Council under the Spanish Presidency began on Sunday with negotiations on fishing opportunities. On the second day of the meeting, the Council considered the compromise text of the proposed regulation on new genomic techniques and discussed the labelling of the origin of honey blends. State Secretary Eva Knez participated in the second day of the meeting, in which the Council discussed the proposal for a regulation on plant protection products, took note of the situation in agricultural markets and took stock of the strategic plans of the common agricultural policy.

Call for the protection of populations from genocide and the implementation of the responsibility to protect within the UN system
The United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted on 9 December 1948, was the first international human rights treaty to define the responsibility of states to prevent and punish genocide, a crime that shocked the conscience of the world at that time. One day later, on 10 December, UN Member States adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
