Establishment of the Slovenian-Cypriot Friendship Association and an exhibition of Slovenian artists in Cyprus

On February 28, 2024, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Athens, together with the Honorary Consulate General and the Municipal University Library in Limassol, organized the opening of the exhibition of the private art collection of the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of the Slovenia in Limassol, dr. Evros Alexandrou with the title "The touch of a Slovenian painter."

With the opening of the exhibition the Embassy marked the Slovenian cultural holiday, Prešeren Day, on the occasion of the official visit of the President of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia Urška Klakočar Zupančič to Cyprus. In addition to the President of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia and the members of the parliamentary group of friendship between Cyprus and Slovenia, the opening was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Annita Demetriou with members of the House of Representatives, the Mayor of Limassol, the Rector of the University of Limassol, representatives of Cypriot institutions and local communities, the diplomatic-consular corps, the Slovenian community in Cyprus and journalists.

The private art collection of the Honorary Consul General includes 17 works of art by nine renowned Slovenian painters, namely Jože Ciuha, Janez Boljka, Andraž Šalamun, Zvest Apollonius, Beti Tomšič, Marko Butina, Stane Jagodič, Janko Kastelic and Karolina Koglot.

Ambassador Tamara Weingerl Požar welcomed the guests, presented the Slovenian cultural holiday and the importance of culture for the creation of Slovenian statehood. She emphasized the friendly ties between the two countries, the activities and achievements of the embassy in the field of international political cooperation, cultural and public diplomacy.

In their speeches, the President of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia Klakočar Zupančič and Speaker of the House of Representatives Cipra Demetriou emphasized the importance of art and culture in connecting and bridging differences between nations and Slovenian-Cypriot friendship. Key political positions in support of island reunification were highlighted. They also touched on the issue of women's empowerment.

On the occasion of the establishment of the Slovenian-Cypriot friendship association, which took place just before the opening of the exhibition in the library, the President of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia met with representatives of the Slovenian community living in Cyprus. She signed guest books of the Cypriot-Slovenian Friendship Society and the City University Library in Limassol, further emphasizing the bond between culture and the Slovenian community in Cyprus.

The City University Library of Limassol is located in the building of the former Pilavakis mansion and is one of the largest libraries on the island. It stands out for the wealth of Cypriot culture and civilization, as it contains over 60,000 copies of books.
