Minister Fajon in the European Parliament: EU enlargement is a geostrategic necessity

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon addressed MEPs at the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) during a debate on EU enlargement. She stressed that EU enlargement is a geostrategic imperative and that both the countries aspiring to become part of the EU family and the EU Member States should prepare for this important step.

“The enlargement of the European Union is a geostrategic necessity and must go hand in hand with the internal reforms of the Union. Slovenia is one of the countries that supported the strategic move of granting candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina when no one believed it was possible. This weekend's meeting of EU leaders is an opportunity to take the next step - to start accession negotiations. Bosnia and Herzegovina deserves this because the country has made significant progress," the Minister said, adding that "Slovenia also welcomes the progress made by Moldova and Ukraine on their EU path."

Participating in the debate on the EU’s enlargement policy in the European Parliament Committee were some other foreign ministers and secretaries of state from EU Member States. In the debate ahead of the March European Council, the Committee wanted to hear different views on enlargement and gather ideas on how to deal with the challenges the EU will face in the future as it expands to include more countries.

Today, Minister Fajon was a keynote speaker at the AmCham EU’s Transatlantic Conference 2024, where she spoke about the strategic partnership between the EU and the US. In the afternoon, Minister Fajon will visit Bruges to deliver a lecture to students at the College of Europe and to meet Slovenian students and Rector Federica Mogherini.
