Prime Minister Janez Janša today, on the margins of the informal meeting of the European Council, gave an interview for Bloomberg TV, in which he spoke primarily about the war in Ukraine.

After yesterday’s meeting of European leaders in Versailles to discuss the situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Janez Janša said that the informal summit lasted so long because many important decisions needed to be taken. "The Versailles Declaration and the declaration on the Russian invasion of Ukraine are something that must be debated, while at the same time, appropriate political guidance for the European institutions and the Member States should be found," stressed the Prime Minister, adding that it was the leaders’ debate about Ukraine’s membership of the EU that took the most time.

Prime Minister Janez Janša is today attending an informal European Council meeting in Versailles, France. At the meeting, EU leaders will discuss Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and its consequences and how to strengthen European sovereignty, reduce dependencies, and design a new growth and investment model.

Prime Minister Janez Janša today attended the ceremony to mark the unveiling of the bust of Dr Jože Pučnik, which took place in front of the Brdo Congress Centre at Brdo pri Kranju. He was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. The participants at the ceremony were also addressed by the Minister of Culture, Vasko Simoniti. Prime Minister Janša, together with Dr Jože Pučnik’s son, Gorazd Pučnik, unveiled the bust.

State Secretary mag. Monika Kirbiš Rojs and representatives of the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy today attended the fourth regular meeting of the Development Council of the Vzhodna Slovenija cohesion region dedicated to the programming period 2021-2027. The wife of the Slovenian Prime Minister, Urška Bačovnik Janša, addressed the participants of the conference “Iranian Women on the March to Equality and Freedom – the fight and progress of Iranian Women” which was organised by the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). Foreign Minister Anže Logar attended the extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Brussels, led by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. State Secretary Aleš Irgolič attended the second conference of agriculture ministers from the Visegrad Group extended to Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Slovenia at the invitation of the Hungarian Minister of Agriculture István Nagy. Today, Prime Minister Janez Janša attended the literary evening concluding the Year of Josip Jurčič in Muljava as a keynote speaker. The literary evening was organised by the Ivančna Gorica Library and Municipality under the "Meet me in the library" European project. The last and most important book on Jurčič that was written as a part of the Year of Josip Jurčič, a literary history monograph by Urška Perenič entitled "Josip Jurčič: The Storyteller of his and our time", was presented at the event. In addition, young moderators and their mentor, Bernarda Žarn, musicians, Matevž Kavšek and Dominik Kastelic, and the organisers of the Year of Josip Jurčič also participated at the event.

Minister of the Interior Aleš Hojs attended the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. According to estimates by the Ministry of Finance, general government debt in Slovenia decreased by almost 5 percentage points in 2021 compared to 2020. In 2020, general government debt amounted to 79.8% of gross domestic product, and in 2021, according to estimates by the Ministry of Finance, it decreased to 74.9% of gross domestic product.

Minister Jože Podgoršek attended via video conference an extraordinary meeting of EU agriculture ministers, which was convened by the French Presidency of the Council of the EU in light of the war in Ukraine. Ministers exchanged views on the situation and impacts of the war in Ukraine on EU's agricultural markets and sought solutions for mitigating the consequences.

Following yesterday’s military attack by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, in which the Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia was destroyed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs re-summoned Russian Ambassador Timur Eyvazov. State Secretary Gašper Dovžan handed over the diplomatic note of protest of the Republic of Slovenia to the Ambassador of the Russian Federation requesting an apology and compensation for the damage suffered.

Political consultations between Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were held in Sarajevo, headed by State Secretary Stanislav Raščan from the Slovenian side and Josip Brkić, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the host’s side.

Today, on March 2, 2022, the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for the Support and Integration of Migrants established a government call center with experts from various fields offering information on support and assistance provided to Ukrainian citizens. The call center operates daily Monday to Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm.

Prime Minister Janez Janša today responded on Twitter to the announcement that the sanctions against Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine are already having an impact on the banking system, that Russian-owned banks in Europe are facing reduced confidence, and that, as a result, a decision has been taken at the level of the European Central Bank and the Single Resolution Board to suspend operations of Sberbank Europe AG, which also has a subsidiary bank in Slovenia.
