Artist and illustrator Marlenka Stupica (1927-2022) dies

Artist and illustrator Marlenka Stupica provided the artwork for more than 100 children’s books and picture books over her career of more than 70 years. As culture minister Dr Asta Vrečko wrote following her death, Marlenka Stupica was one of the most important and recognisable artists in Slovenia, whose work is celebrated even outside the country’s borders.

In her tribute to one of Slovenia’s most famous illustrators she added:

"She left an indelible mark on the field of illustration ever since the fifties, when she was one of the first women to graduate from the newly formed fine arts academy in Ljubljana and embarked on her own artistic journey. She illustrated more than a hundred books, and received numerous accolades for her work.

Let us celebrate her timeless creativity, without which Slovenian art and culture and our own childhoods would not have been the same. Her work lives on."
