Ministry of Foreign Affairs Travel Advice: COVID-19

As the probability of infection with Covid-19 remains present, Slovenian citizens wishing to travel abroad are advised to follow the news on the spread of the virus, especially on the planned route, to check the conditions of entry into the country of destination, and to comply with local rules. Slovenian citizens returning from abroad are advised to follow the recommendations of the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ).

    The Council of Europe is a key international organisation committed to promoting the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and strengthening democracy and the rule of law in the wider European area. The Council's efforts have paved the way to one of the greatest achievements of present-day Europe, the abolition of the death penalty in all of its Member States.

    Human rights are universal and indivisible. Everyone has the same rights, regardless of nationality, place of residence, gender, ethnicity, skin colour, religion, language or any other personal circumstance. Therefore, the Slovenian foreign policy regards political, civil, economic, social, and cultural rights to be equal.

    The designation of depositaries of multilateral treaties is a result of an increasing number of states participating in the procedures for the conclusion of such treaties as well as a large number and complexity of activities required before and after the entry into force of multilateral treaties.

    Through development cooperation, Slovenia helps attain a balanced and fair global development and takes on its share of responsibility for poverty eradication, inequality reduction and sustainable development in partner countries in the Western Balkans, the European neighbourhood and Sub-Saharan Africa.

    Slovenia aims to raise awareness of the importance, goals, and achievements of development cooperation and humanitarian aid. It is essential to realise that such activities in partner countries also indirectly affect life in Slovenia.

    Slovenia strongly condemns all forms of terrorism and violent extremism regardless of their nature or religious, ethnic or other ideology. Terrorism undermines the basic values such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, leading to negative effects on the national economy, sustainable development, and national security. Nothing can justify terrorism – ever.

  • Arms control

    Slovenia is striving to implement and strengthen the internationally agreed restrictions on the development, production, stockpiling, proliferation, and use of small arms and light weapons, as well as conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction.

  • The Slovenian language in the European Union

    The principle of multilingualism is enshrined in the Union’s legal foundations. Its main aspects are set out in the Treaties, EEC Council (1958) Regulation No 1 and the accession acts of any new Member State that opts for its national language to become one of the EU official languages. Multilingualism is a guarantee of democracy, transparency, and legal certainty for all citizens of the Union.

Projects

  • As Slovenia and Croatia had not managed to resolve their dispute concerning the border on land and sea despite numerous attempts, on 4 November 2009 they, with the assistance of the European Commission, signed the Arbitration Agreement establishing an Arbitral Tribunal.

  • Under the auspices of the international community, five countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia – today Serbia) signed the Agreement on Succession Issues by which it was conclusively confirmed that five sovereign equal successor states were formed upon the dissolution of the former SFRY.

  • Brexit

    On 29 March 2017, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) began the process of leaving the European Union (EU). The UK and the EU negotiated the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union in October 2019. On 17 October 2019, the European Council endorsed the revised agreement. Following the general election in the UK in December 2019, the UK Parliament will endorse the agreement in January 2020. The European Parliament will endorse the agreement on 29 January 2020.

  • The empowerment of children, notably through education about their rights and guaranteed access to justice, remains a key priority of Slovenian foreign policy in the area of human rights.

  • MLA Initiative

    Underway

    The MLA Initiative is an initiative led by Slovenia, Argentina, Belgium, Mongolia, the Netherlands and Senegal for the adoption of the Convention on International Cooperation in the Investigation and Prosecution of the Crime of Genocide, Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes.
