This week, Slovenia is commemorating two important occasions. On 19 May, Slovenia is celebrating Lipizzan Day for the first time, following the Government's proclamation of the day earlier this year. The date holds particular historical and cultural significance for the country, marking the signing of the document establishing the Lipica Stud Farm in 1580. The Lipizzaner horse is one of the most recognisable symbols of Slovenian heritage, national identity and historical continuity, and its significance has transcended national boundaries for centuries. The proclamation of Lipizzan Day marks an important milestone in the effort to systematically protect and promote one of the most recognisable symbols of Slovenia's cultural heritage.
Slovenia is also celebrating World Bee Day for the eighth consecutive year. This year's observance highlights the partnership between people and bees in sustaining food systems, human well-being and the environment. Following Slovenia's initiative, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 20 May as World Bee Day in 2017, and the day was first commemorated in 2018. This year, World Bee Day is being celebrated under the slogan "Bee together for people and the planet – a partnership that sustains us all", highlighting the vital role of bees and other pollinators in agri-food systems and in maintaining the health of ecosystems worldwide.
