Slovenia Weekly: Success for water

This week sees two international days, namely World Water Day and International Day of Forests. Water and forests are two commodities on which we all depend for life and which cannot be taken for granted. That is why their protection and sustainable management is essential for the health of the planet and the well-being of people.

Slovenia can consider the proposal to appoint a UN Special Envoy for Water, which has already been supported by 150 countries, as a great success of Slovenian diplomacy at the UN International Water Conference. Slovenia also presented a proposal to establish regular intergovernmental conferences on water. "In Slovenia, we are aware that the future of us all, of our children and the fate of the world depends on water. For this reason, we are working to raise the profile of water-related issues on the global agenda and to ensure that they are addressed in an integrated manner at all levels," said Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob is attending a European Council meeting and the Euro Summit in Brussels. The leaders’ two-day discussions will focus on Russian aggression in Ukraine, the competitiveness of European industry, the strengthening of the EU’s single market and the state of the European economy, and energy.
