Slovenia Weekly: Challenges and opportunities

Cutting red tape and decentralisation are two key commitments of the coalition agreement of the present Slovenian government. Another priority of the government is balanced development throughout the whole country. This is one of the reasons why cabinet ministers, headed by Prime Minister Janez Janša, started to visit the Slovenian regions. The government chose Koroška for its first regional visit to receive first-hand information about the problems and challenges faced by the region and prepare appropriate measures and solutions. The key projects for Koroška include transport and communication infrastructure, while timber is one of the region’s greatest assets.

The residents of the region can look forward to the formal commencement of the construction of the third development axis announced for next week, when “the first shovel will be dug” on this long-awaited stretch. The third development axis is crucial for the development of Koroška, as it will improve its connection with other Slovenian regions, bring new jobs and help significantly to increase the prosperity of the people. According to the Prime Minister, Koroška has made progress in recent years, but some opportunities have remained unrealised.
