False posts about the Prime Minister on Facebook

Since 15 January, paid false posts have been appearing on the social media platform Facebook in which an unknown author used the visual identity of the Slovenian media outlet Slovenske novice. The posts contained computer-manipulated photographs of Prime Minister Robert Golob and misleading text suggesting that the Prime Minister had been arrested by the police.

Both posts contained a link to a website that supposedly provided more information about this alleged event. An analysis of the website showed that it was completely without content. It was established that the page had been registered in January this year, while the owner of the web domain remained anonymous.

The competent Government offices assess that these posts originate from an unknown actor whose aim is to discredit the current Government and introduce uncertainty and instability into Slovenian society. The posts were paid advertisements, meaning that the user paid Facebook for them to be shown to as many people as possible. Such an approach increases the visibility of the post and allows it to appear to people who do not follow a particular profile.

The false posts have since been removed from Facebook. The Government calls on all social media users to exercise caution: do not trust or share content that appears false or misleading. Before sharing a post, verify its credibility and ask yourself whether it could be true.

The Government has also prepared guidelines and advice to help recognise false news.
