Business to Diplomacy event: Slovenia – a unique film destination

The Business to Diplomacy event “Slovenia – a unique film destination” was organised by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Municipality of Piran and the Slovenian Film Centre. At the meeting, the foreign diplomatic corps was briefed on Slovenia as an attractive country for the film industry.

The event got underway with opening speeches by Dr Slobodan Šešum, Director-General of the Directorate for Economic and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Mr Christian Poletti, Vice-Mayor of the Municipality of Piran, Dr Blaž Mazi, Director-General of the Media Directorate at the Ministry of Culture, Ms Dubravka Kalin, Director-General of the Tourism Directorate at the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, and Ms Maja Pak, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board.

“The event was intentionally organised during the week of the 26th Slovenian Film Festival in Portorož, a top event in the Slovenian cultural calendar. It is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the importance of film for the creative industries. At the same time, it provides an opportunity to meet and talk to Slovenian filmmakers,” said Dr Slobodan Šešum, Director-General of the Directorate for Economic and Public Diplomacy, in his introductory remarks.

He also said that the Slovenian Film Festival is a platform that brings together filmmakers, the creative industry and film lovers. It is a bridge between culture and business, combining artistic expression with the business potential of the film industry.

“The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia attaches great importance to cultural diplomacy in general, recognising the power of culture and the arts in building bridges between nations and promoting mutual cooperation. This strengthens Slovenia's international reputation and enables the forging of long-term ties,” Dr Šešum emphasised.

The participants of the roundtable on Slovenia as a unique film destination were Ms Nataša Bučar, Director of the Slovenian Film Centre, Ms Ira Cecić, producer, Mr Klemen Dvornik, Director of the Slovenian Filmmakers Association, and Mr Matej Knep from the Municipality of Piran.

It was pointed out that Slovenia, with its exceptional natural and cultural diversity, is being increasingly recognised as an attractive destination for filmmaking. It offers a variety of locations that provide an irresistible backdrop for filmmakers. Picturesque landscapes, historic cities and unique cultural monuments provide a source of inspiration for unforgettable film scenes. Through film, the scenic attractions of Slovenia can be showcased and interest in visiting the country can be generated. The film industry can contribute to the development of the country's economy, its tourism and infrastructure, and its openness to the world.
