International cooperation in the field of sport
International cooperation takes place:
- Within the framework of the European Union and international organisations (including through the Erasmus+ programme in the field of sport)
- Bilaterally with other countries and
- Directly between sports organisations (competitions, exchanges of experts and athletes). Direct cooperation in sport between sports organisations is the responsibility of Slovenian sports organisations, led by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia – Association of Sports Federations, national sports federations and other sports and sport-related organisations. The ministry responsible for sport is responsible for interstate and intergovernmental cooperation. International cooperation between sports organisations mainly takes place through participation in international competitions, mutual exchanges of experts and athletes, and other forms of exchange and cooperation.

2024
In December 2024, we established the Cross-Border Sports Coordination Body, which, for the first time, systematically connected Slovenian cross-border sports organisations, the Olympic Committee of Slovenia – Association of Sports Federations, the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad and the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport. Its purpose is to improve the effectiveness of mutual cooperation, networking, collaboration and the exchange of information, knowledge and good practice in the field of sports cooperation, with an emphasis on strengthening national identity and preserving the Slovenian language. The opening of the first regional offices abroad means more than simple administrative support. It means that Slovenians living abroad feel connected to their homeland also through sport. It ensures the preservation of our language and culture, while strengthening Slovenia's international recognition as a country that lives and breathes sport. It is a bridge of friendship, belonging and shared values.
