The Unit is the investigative body responsible for investigating rail accidents and incidents, its main purpose is to identify the causes of accidents and issue recommendations to prevent similar accidents in the future.

In addition to drawing up reports for improving safety, the Unit advises and reports on its work to the responsible minister. The Unit also reports to the European Union Agency for Railways and participates in the network of national investigation bodies operating under the auspices of the European Union Railway Agency.

The Unit cooperates with the national investigation bodies of EU Member States and the International Union of Railways (UIC) in investigating rail accidents and incidents. Moreover, it cooperates with the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities, as well as sits on various commissions.
