Slovenia Weekly: At home in Europe – safe in NATO

Danijel Kovačič Grmek/Government Communication Office

It was under this slogan that, on the 23rd of March 2003, the citizens of the Republic of Slovenia, voted in favour of Slovenia joining NATO (and the European Union).

Slovenia became a member of the North Atlantic Alliance 20 years ago, on the 29th of March 2004, and a member of the European Union on the 1st of May 2004.

NATO membership provided us with a stable security and political environment, and gave the Slovenian Armed Forces new opportunities to operate, enabling Slovenia to participate in various missions and international operations. Participating in these operations demonstrates our alliance and solidarity with other members, and represents an important part of our contribution to global stability.
