"As one of the leading countries engaged in efforts to protect the seas and coasts, Slovenia is ready to assume presidency of the Barcelona Convention in the period 2024-2025", said Prime Minister Robert Golob in the introduction to the ministerial meeting of the parties to the Convention (COP 23) that took place in Portorož.
He stressed that they the issue was not measures for the distant future, as, given the ubiquity of climate change, immediate measures were necessary. According to him, regional solutions, such as those taken in the framework of the Barcelona Convention on the protection of the marine environment and coastal areas of the Mediterranean, pave the way for the Cop28 global climate conference in Dubai.
In addition, Slovenia, as one of the pioneers in water diplomacy, aims to use its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council to present to the world its experiences and solutions, and thus contribute to making better decisions for everyone.
The Barcelona Convention was established long before other international organisations to fight climate change. It can be considered an example, for instance, in adopting a global agreement to limit plastic pollution.
Among the convention’s successes, we can single out the agreement by which the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) limited sulphur dioxide emissions from ships in the entire Mediterranean. Prime Minister Golob called this decision historic.
This week, the government newsletter Slovenia Weekly reported that Slovenia had made the most progress among 39 EU and OECD countries in reducing the number of children living below the poverty line over the past decade, according to a report published on Tuesday by the UNICEF Office of Research - Innocenti.
The newsletter also reports that the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 UNESCO Intangible Heritage Convention made a decision to include "Midwifery: knowledge, skills and practices" in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Midwifery is already the seventh entry in the UNESCO Representative List concerning Slovenia.
