Slovenia Weekly: Success

"Today in New York, Slovenia achieved one of its greatest successes in international diplomacy," said Prime Minister Robert Golob on the occasion of Slovenia’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024–2025.

Slovenia won a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2024–2025 term with 80% support from the UN General Assembly. The opposing candidate in the Eastern European group, Belarus, received 38 votes, while Slovenia received the support of as many as 153 UN Member States.

Prime Minister Golob described the outcome of the vote as the result of a year of hard work by a team that included all of our country’s highest representatives who helped to achieve this success. "However, our true endeavour is merely commencing. Slovenia, as a small but confident member of the Security Council, will be able to make an important contribution in areas where sometimes the bigger countries lose their strength; as such, we will act as a factor of integration between different interests," he added, stressing that Slovenia will work to preserve international peace and security, and announced that climate change will also be at the top of the agenda, as it is the biggest threat to our future, to our security and to peace in the world.
