Prešeren Day – the Slovenian cultural holiday is just behind us. It is the only Slovenian national holiday that is written with a capital letter. It is celebrated each year on 8 February, the anniversary of the death of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren. This year’s celebration was also accompanied by cultural events both large and small. The central event took place in front of the house where Prešeren was born in Vrba. The holiday also saw a recitation of his poetry in Ljubljana and was celebrated at the Prešeren Fair in Kranj.
On the occasion of the cultural holiday, Prime Minister Robert Golob wrote that this day reminds us of the importance of culture in the nation’s history and in the shaping of our national identity. According to the Prime Minister, it is a day when we remember the artists who carried the Slovenian language, tradition, knowledge and creative potential out into the world and established the global recognition of our culture.
