Slovenia Weekly: Committed to climate neutrality

In a report published a few days ago, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) found that in the past three decades, temperatures in Europe have risen twice as fast as the global average, representing the fastest growth of all continents. In thirty years, the average temperature in Europe has risen by close to 1.5°C. Slovenia is warming even faster than Europe as a whole.

Slovenia, which was represented at this week’s COP27 Climate Change Conference by the country’s President, has committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The President also confirmed Slovenia’s commitment to limiting atmospheric warming, and providing developmental and humanitarian aid to the world’s most vulnerable populations.

The Climate Change Conference is also important in terms of foreign policy. Given its candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2024–2025, Slovenia is also very actively engaged in discussions and activities relating to climate security. Slovenia advocates the inclusion of climate security in the prevention of conflicts, peace-building and peace-keeping efforts.
