Finally, we have some good news: the fire in the border area with Italy is under control. More than ten thousand Slovenian firefighters – with very much appreciate help from abroad - have been battling with it for the last 10 days. The clean-up, reforestation planning and assessment of the damage is now under way, but we all know that it will take decades for the Karst landscape to recover. The government also decided to apply for help from the EU Solidarity Fund.

In the coming months, analysis will be conducted on the course of the intervention, but one thing is already clear: the battle against the fire was won by cordiality, dedication, and decades of hard work in the volunteer fire brigades across Slovenia. With more than 161 thousand members, these associations have been working hard with young people for years: training them to become people of heart, teaching them firefighting skills and strengthening community spirit.

Also, the firefighters who extinguished the fire in the Karst were once part of this upbringing. And their youngsters rewarded them for all the effort of the last two weeks by winning the Firefighters' Olympics in Celje. With the fire extinguished, there is no better way to continue the summer.
