Slovenia Weekly: #BeActive

Dean Dubokovič/STO

Yesterday was a public holiday in Slovenia. For the first time, we celebrated the Day of Sport, and we celebrated it as the name suggests: with many recreational sporting events throughout the country. The initiative for the proclamation came a year ago from the Slovenian Olympic Committee and immidiately received a positive public response when it was first mentioned.

23 September was chosen because on this day in 2000, the Slovenian national anthem was played in honour of Olympic rowers Iztok Čop and Luka Špik and shooter Rajmond Debevec. For the last few years, 23 September has also been the European Week of Sport, an initiative of the European Commission to encourage people to take part in physical activity, which Slovenia is also part of.

The Slovenian Sport Day promotes the values of being physically active, enjoying life and looking after well-being. There are plenty of opportunities to join one of the organised exercise sessions in the gym or outdoors. Or you can simply go for a long walk in nature. Anything is fine as long as it makes you feel good.
