Slovenia Weekly: Fight against COVID-19 as the opportunity to build fairer, healthier world

Somewhere between the news of the growing number of COVID-19 cases, the implementation of measures to manage the epidemic and the efforts to achieve the highest vaccination coverage as soon as possible, we also marked 7 April, World Health Day, in the last week. This year, the WHO highlights health inequities, which became even more prominent in the last year.

The COVID-19 epidemic has had a profound impact on every single aspect of our lives. We are still unaware of all its ramifications, but its negative effects will be even more grave for those groups of people who were already vulnerable and more exposed to the disease. We are all equal when it comes to the virus. It does not choose according to gender, race or religious belief; it does not care about social status. But we do not have the same starting points in the fight against the virus.

The epidemic is also a reminder that solidarity and compassion are an important link in any, not only Slovenian, society. Let us follow the WHO call and build fairer, healthier post-COVID world.
