The system of identification and registration of animals is governed by EU regulations. By keeping registers of cattle, pigs, ovine and caprine animals, equidae, bee houses and other animal species, the traceability is provided from birth of animals to entry into the food chain, which is crucial for the control of infectious diseases and for providing safe food. Data are also used for planning and managing agricultural policy measures, in zootechnics, statistics, research and for other purposes.
