Slovenia at the panel on international humanitarian law
Held during Geneva Peace Week, the panel aimed to highlight the impact of respect for international humanitarian law (IHL) on the dynamics of contemporary armed conflicts, as well as its role in post-conflict settings. The discussion emphasised the importance of upholding IHL in order to preserve humanity and dignity during armed conflicts, build trust, create conditions for political dialogue and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
Slovenia was represented by Dr Marko Rakovec, Director of the Directorate for International Law and Protection of Interests at the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. He highlighted Slovenia's efforts and activities as a staunch advocate for global respect for international humanitarian law, working to ensure that IHL remains central to multilateral discussions, including within the UN Security Council. Dr Rakovec also underlined Slovenia's active participation in the ICRC initiative to promote political commitment to IHL and in the Global Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts.
The panel provided an excellent opportunity to present the wide range of activities and initiatives of Slovenian humanitarian diplomacy, and also marked the first occasion to introduce the Bled Strategic Forum in Geneva.
