The reconstruction of the first tube of the Karavanke Tunnel, led by DARS d.d., Motorway Company of the Republic of Slovenia, will get underway as part of the announced EU-funded project. Extensive construction work will include renovation of 4.5 km of road, the replacement of the existing bridge with a new one, the construction of a 1.1 km motorway diversion, the construction of a new toll station and the demolition of the existing one, the establishment of a new police checkpoint, and the installation of modern electrical and mechanical equipment in the tunnel.

This investment is an important step towards improving the transport infrastructure on one of the key transport corridors in Slovenia, the Karavanke Tunnel, a border tunnel between Slovenia and Austria. The Karavanke Tunnel is part of the pan-European transport network TEN-T and the forthcoming renovation of the existing tube will help significantly improve both flow throughput and road safety.

The project will be implemented under priority Sustainable (cross-)regional mobility and connectivity of Slovenia's EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027. It will pursue specific objective Developing a sustainable climate resilient, intelligent, secure, sustainable and intermodal TEN-T (Cohesion Fund).

The project is estimated at €114,816,062 and will receive over €2 million, more specifically, €32,210,000 from the Cohesion Fund.
