Slovenian literature presented in Greece
Slovenian literary week in Greece was opened by Drago Jančar, one of the most prominent contemporary Slovenian authors. He visited Greece on the occasion of the publication of his second novel, And Love Itself (Ακόμα και ο έρωτας), translated into Greek by Lojzka Avayanos.
He first presented his book in Athens at a literary evening on Wednesday, 15 May 2024, at Epi Lexi bookstore. The conversation with the author was led by Anastasis Vistonitis, a renowned Greek poet and literary critic. A day later, Jančar presented the novel at the 20th Thessaloniki International Book Fair, where the author talked about his work with the editor of the publishing house Kastaniotis, Grigoris Bekos.
On Friday, May 17, 2024, another prolific Slovenian artist, Dušan Šarotar, presented his novel Panorama to the Greek audience at the Thessaloniki International Book Fair.
The Slovenian ambassador in Athens, Tamara Weingerl Požar, addressed the events. The ambassador highlighted the dynamic bilateral political dialogue between Greece and Slovenia, which culminated in the April visit of Slovenian President Pirc Musar to Greece.
She emphasized that the Slovene language, art and culture have always been of great importance to the Slovene nation and have made a decisive contribution to the existence of our nation over the centuries, even in the time when statehood was not formed. That is why the embassy is always especially happy to support and present talented Slovenian artists to the Greek public, from young talented musicians to the most established and awarded contemporary European novelists.
In her address, she highlighted the awards and recognitions that the authors received in Slovenia and abroad.
