Prime Minister Robert Golob at a special meeting of the European Council

Prime Minister Robert Golob attended a special European Council meeting in Brussels. EU leaders discussed the current situation in the international community, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine, relations with Turkey, the competitiveness of the European economy, the future of the EU internal market and the Capital Markets Union.

The participants had a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky via video link.

Several EU leaders, including Prime Minister Golob, called for a calming of tensions in the Middle East, which have escalated following the Iranian attack on Israel.  They supported the imposition of further restrictive measures against Iran and called for restraint from all sides.

"We have discussed how to reduce tensions in the Middle East and we are resolute on this – we must appeal to all partners in the region to refrain from escalating or heightening tensions. The only way to lasting peace is for all of us to be aware of our responsibilities. And this is what we stand for in all crisis hotspots," the Prime Minister said. He added that "the world is at a very dangerous point where war has become an acceptable means of resolving disputes. This process must be stopped and brought back into the framework we all want. Negotiations for peace must be a priority."

At the European Council meetings in March and June 2023, members of the European Council discussed how to build a strong economy that can meet the challenges of the future and ensure prosperity in Europe. Enrico Letta, the President of the Jacques Delors Institute, presented an independent report on the future of the EU Single Market to the leaders.

"The report is comprehensive and there is much in it that is very positive. However, as a small Member State, Slovenia cannot fully agree with some of the views expressed, as they are about centralising certain areas, especially infrastructure. I believe that the Capital Markets Union can be a step forward in the right direction," said the Prime Minister.

Slovenia's position on EU enlargement remains unchanged. "Slovenia is in favour of the enlargement of the Union, and we have an important debate ahead of us on how the Union needs to be reformed in order to make enlargement a success," added Prime Minister Golob.
