On this occasion, Prime Minister Robert Golob said this is an exceptionally important step for Lendava, Prekmurje and, ultimately, all of Slovenia.

"Slovenia is very attractive with regard to foreign high-tech investment, and one reason for this is the good infrastructure. It's also attractive because it offers a pretty good R&D environment, and we have people with expertise and knowledge that is sought all over Europe," stressed the Prime Minister, adding that Sandoz has recognised Slovenia as a key location where it will not only develop biosimilars, but also build its own future.

"I may be exaggerating if I say that Sandoz's future depends on Slovenia, but I think there is a good symbiosis between the two, and I'm confident we'll know how to use this to the benefit of both sides," said the Prime Minister. He drew attention to his words at the economic summit last week, when he said that thirty years ago Slovenia dreamed of becoming the new Switzerland: "When it comes to high-tech investment in biopharmacy, we've managed to become a miniature Switzerland. Today I hope this sets an example for all other regions and industries, and thus not only the Slovenian regions, but also other industries." He pointed out that the Slovenian Government has increased its investments in innovation, research and development: "The investments totalled EUR 300 million in 2021, EUR 350 million last year and already EUR 410 million this year, with over EUR 550 million planned for next year," highlighted the Prime Minister, adding that "by investing in research and development, we're also making it possible for similar little Switzerlands to be created in other areas."

According to the Prime Minister, research and development can create high-tech jobs, which in turn can create knowhow that will be recognised across the globe, and thanks to which capital will flow into Slovenia from the entire world.

The Slovenian Government and Lek farmacevtska družba d.d., a member of the Sandoz Group, signed a memorandum of understanding on the planned construction of a high-tech centre for the production of biosimilars in Lendava in March this year. The Government has supported the investment of Lek, a long-term strategic investor and socially responsible and sustainability-oriented company, in the construction of a high-tech centre for the production of biosimilars through a direct investment incentive. The estimated value of the project is EUR 400 million. The new facility is expected to provide 300 new jobs, with emphasis on high-added value positions. The production centre with a low environmental impact is planned to be in full operation by the end of 2026.
