State Secretary Benedejčič receives high Ukrainian decoration

Based on a decree issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Slovenia, Andriy Taran, awarded the State Secretary for National and International Security, Andrej Benedejčič, the Order of Prince Jaroslav the Wise.

Mr Benedejčič received this high decoration for his important personal contribution to strengthening bilateral cooperation, supporting the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and promoting Ukraine around the world.

In his thank-you speech, the State Secretary recalled the ties binding Slovenians and Ukrainians, including their shared historical experience. Both nations have had to fight for their right to exist and their identity, which is why even the personal stories of the two countries’ greatest poets and contemporaries, France Prešeren and Taras Shevchenko, are so similar. Both were persecuted for their belief in the natural beauty of their respective languages and in those languages’ right to exist.

Mr Benedejčič also acknowledged the members of Ukraine’s Civil Protection Service sent to Slovenia to alleviate the consequences of the August floods some two months ago. Ukraine’s gesture was an example of true reciprocity and solidarity in practice. That is why Slovenia will continue to stand by Ukraine’s side in its just fight, not only in the name of international law, but also to lend a helping hand to a brother nation.

The event was attended by a number of high representatives, including Prime Minister Robert Golob.
