The Slovenian Prime Minister stressed that we must do everything in our power to de-escalate the situation. He strongly and firmly condemned the Hamas attacks and called for the release of the hostages. Slovenia stands in support of the protection human lives, and it is therefore vital to establish peace on both sides. Civilians must be protected and the principles of international humanitarian law must be upheld, enabling the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid in accordance with these principles. In Gaza, we are witnessing one of the direst crises in its already turbulent history, which is why it is crucial to prevent an even greater humanitarian catastrophe.

The European Council members were united in condemning the terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel and called for the release of the hostages as soon as possible. They stressed Israel's right to defend itself, which is limited by international law, in particular international humanitarian law. Among other things, the latter provides for the protection of all civilians and allows for the delivery of humanitarian aid. The EU leaders therefore stressed the importance of access to emergency humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.

It is crucial to prevent further regional escalation. The EU is committed to a lasting and sustainable peace based on a two-state solution through reinvigorated efforts in the Middle East Peace Process. The leaders underlined the need to engage broadly with the legitimate Palestinian authorities as well as regional and international partners who could have a positive role to play in preventing further escalation.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister responded to the attack on a hospital and school in Gaza: "I am shocked by the reports. The principles of international law must be respected and innocent civilians must be protected. Hospitals and other humanitarian infrastructure must never be targeted and must be protected from any military action."
