Minister Tanja Fajon in Basovizza on respect and cooperation

Today, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon attended a commemorative ceremony in honour of the heroes of Basovizza, marking the 93rd anniversary of their death. She delivered a solemn address and laid a memorial wreath.

In her address, Minister Fajon recounted the tragic fates of Ferdo Bidovec, Zvonimir Miloš, Franjo Marušič and Alojz Valenčič, who all fought against fascism. "Basovizza is a testimony to the struggle for freedom and equality," said Minister Fajon, adding that it is a reminder of suffering, but also a symbol of Slovenian pride and defiance.

"Basovizza is not only a testimony to a tragic era, but also a story of Slovenian and Italian people who lived side by side for centuries, overcoming divisions and intolerance, and building bridges of respect and cooperation," Minister Fajon affirmed. She also pointed out that, despite the difficult challenges brought about by the common Slovenian-Italian history, perseverance and the will to cooperate have always prevailed among the people of both countries.

Minister Fajon expressed her conviction that it is in the hands of the Slovenian and Italian people to build a common future based on respect and tolerance. "One of the key pillars of this future is European solidarity, which is the fabric of our society and unites us in a common vision," she added.

Intolerance and divisions can be overcome "if we keep to the historical facts of the report of the Joint Slovenian-Italian Cultural and Historical Commission. At the same time, we must resolutely resist populism and interpretations that are not based on the report", Minister Fajon stressed.

Ultimately, the minister expressed her gratitude to Italy for its aid after the recent natural disaster that struck Slovenia, and underlined that the values of peace, humanity and community live among us and will help us respond to future challenges.

Prior to the ceremony, Minister Fajon met with representatives of the Slovenian minority in Italy, the presidents of the two umbrella organisations, the regional councillor, the chair of the Parity Committee, and the senator and representative of the Slovenian national community in Italy.
