Minister Fajon: "18th Bled Strategic Forum once more exceeded our expectations"

The 18th Bled Strategic Forum, which has hosted 32 discussions and brought together nearly 3000 participants, 188 speakers and around 100 representatives of Slovenian and foreign media, is coming to an end. It has once again proven not only to be a hub of ideas and a platform for the most pressing issues of modern society, but also a trademark that is becoming more and more established at the global level.

The discussions at the Forum were traditionally centred around the Western Balkans, and also focused on the need for swift and decisive responses to climate change and the importance of solidarity. “I am delighted that the Bled Strategic Forum has created a new political age and that the phrase 'Bled Commitment' has taken hold, conveying an important message to the region from European Council President Charles Michel on a concrete timeline for the EU enlargement to the countries of the Western Balkans. This is the time to take a step forward,” stressed Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon.

Over the past 18 years, the Bled Strategic Forum has increasingly been taking on the role of a ‘think tank’ for foreign policy and international relations, something that is sorely lacking in Slovenia. This is important with regard to Slovenia’s upcoming membership of the UN Security Council for the 2024–2025 term, when Slovenia will have to tackle global issues and live up to the support shown by partners from around the world in the June elections. This year guests from all over the world have attended the Forum, proving that it has truly become global.

“The concept of the Bled Strategic Forum, which has been modified due to the floods, is a continuation of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia's activities in providing foreign assistance. The Forum has also given me an opportunity to thank everyone for the immeasurable and invaluable solidarity,” said Minister Fajon in regard to the donations for the reconstruction due to the extensive damage caused by the floods in Slovenia. “This year’s Forum is titled ‘Solidarity for Global Security’ – we chose the title some time ago, not knowing that the word solidarity would be in the foreground of this summer and this year’s forum – it could not be more appropriate,” the minister added.

On the second day of the Bled Strategic Forum, Minister Fajon held separate meetings with foreign ministers and special envoys of the Western Balkan countries, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs of North Macedonia Bojan Maričić, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt and Rector of the College of Europe Federica Mogherini. She also participated in the panel entitled “Goodbye Europe!(?) – Global Vassal or Global Leader: Europe in a New Geopolitical Age.”

In the afternoon of the second day of the Bled Strategic Forum, Minister Fajon will hold a meeting with Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, participate in a panel entitled "The Western Balkans: Everything Changes, but Everything Remains the Same?” and address the participants with a concluding speech.
