Prime Minister attends session of the national Children's Parliament

Prime Minister Robert Golob attended the 33rd plenary session of the national Children’s Parliament held at the National Assembly.

The programme, organised by the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth, aims at teaching children about active citizenship and democracy. The main topic of discussion was children and young people’s mental health. As the Prime Minister pointed out in his address, prevention is key.

"Mental illness can affect anyone. There is nothing shameful about it. That is the purpose of destigmatisation, of talking about this, spreading awareness that this is all around us. The most you can do for everyone around you is to speak up about it. Speak up every day. Maybe that will lead to less illness, and you’ll know it was in part thanks to you. Because the best weapon is preventive and not curative action," the Prime Minister told the young parliamentarians. He also told the primary schoolers that they could do the most for their mental health themselves. According to him, a sensible diet and physical activity are among the factors that have a restorative and beneficial effect on our mental health and self-image.

He also touched on the issue of violence and the dangers on social media, calling upon the children to help their friends if they’re attacked: "Don’t attack, don’t be aggressive, but rather enlighten the haters with love. You’ll see that this will force the haters to back off. The more love they get from you through digital networks, the less persistent their hate speech will be. Because it will make them ashamed of themselves."

He ended his speech by thanking the participants in the Children’s Parliament for their bravery, calling upon them to show the same bravery when their friends are in distress.
