Prime Minister Robert Golob visits the Krško Nuclear Power Plant

Prime Minister Robert Golob today visited the Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), the country's largest power plant. As the Prime Minister pointed out after visiting the worksite – the Krško NPP is undergoing an overhaul – the Krško NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Europe to complete a 10-year investment cycle on this scale, following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

According to the Prime Minister, we are not sufficiently aware that, in Europe, the Krško NPP is synonymous with a stable, reliable and safe nuclear power plant. "If there were more such facilities in Europe, the energy situation in Europe would be considerably better," stressed Prime Minister Golob. The Prime Minister exchanged views with the management of the Krško NPP on the energy situation, which is very tense due to geopolitical reasons and Russia's aggression against Ukraine. They agreed that this was an opportunity to reflect on the future role and potential of nuclear technologies, as it would be very difficult for Europe to overcome the current energy situation without maximising the use of all technologies, with renewable energy sources and nuclear technology at the forefront. Nuclear energy is emerging as one of the stabilisers in this energy crisis.

Once the experts have come up with a reliable solution for nuclear technology of Western origin, the conditions will be met for politics to proceed to seek national consent for the needed investment. Regarding the decision on the construction of the second unit of the Krško NPP, the Prime Minister stressed that it was first necessary to prepare appropriate technical solutions and obtain all necessary permits and consents. In this process, the people must be given the opportunity to make an informed decision in a referendum.
