Prime Minister Janez Janša at the session of the Government Council for Slovenians Abroad

  • Former Prime Minister Janez Janša (2020 - 2022)
Today, Prime Minister Janez Janša chaired the session of the Government Council for Slovenians Abroad, which was devoted to discussing the preservation and strengthening of the knowledge of the Slovenian language among Slovenians living abroad, as well as on reviewing the Council's work to date and establishing directions for its future work.

In addition to Minister for Slovenians Abroad Helena Jaklitsch, who is also the vice-chair of the Council, the session was attended by representatives of Slovenian communities abroad and representatives of Slovenian expatriates' and emigrants' organisations active in the field of preserving the Slovenian identity abroad, whereby some of them took part in the session via audio-video link. The session was also attended by ministers and government representatives dealing with the issues of Slovenians abroad, namely ministers Anže Logar, Simona Kustec, Andrej Šircelj, Janez Cigler Kralj and Vasko Simoniti, as well as State Secretary Andrej Čuš and Director of the National Education Institute Vinko Logaj.

At the Council session, the Prime Minister thanked Slovenians from around the world for their ambassadorial work and for representing Slovenia abroad. "We could expand the diplomatic network tenfold, but we could never do as much for Slovenia as you do through your work. Every Slovenian at heart has a certain attitude towards Slovenia, which is reflected in their communication with others. This is the most an individual can do to spread the word about Slovenia." The Prime Minister recalled the role of Slovenians abroad during Slovenia's independence process. "We became aware of the power of Slovenians living abroad 31 years ago when Slovenia did not have formal diplomacy, while the one that did exist worked against us. In this respect, Slovenians from around the world provided an important counterbalance. Within a week, the world's public opinion shifted in our favour because of Slovenians living abroad." At the session, the Prime Minister supported the proposal to hold Council sessions more frequently, which would ensure a new work dynamic. As regards the pending proposals to which attention was called at the session, the Prime Minister expressed his support for all efforts to improve the situation of Slovenians abroad, highlighting in particular the need to ensure work for the younger generations.
