Prime Minister Janša hosts a reception for Slovenian Olympic and Paralympic athletes

  • Former Prime Minister Janez Janša (2020 - 2022)
Following the state ceremony to mark the Day of Slovenian Sport, Prime Minister Janša hosts a reception for Slovenian Olympic and Paralympic athletes at Vila Bled.

In his address, he highlighted the outstanding results of Slovenian athletes at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where they won five medals, and thanked them for their outstanding achievements. As far as sport is concerned, Slovenia is among the very best nations in the world in terms of population, he emphasised. “We are not aware enough of what a superpower Slovenia is in the field of sport.” He went on to say that the Government recognised the importance of sport, so it has significantly increased cash prizes for winning Olympic medals, and an act on investment in sports infrastructure for the next five years and changes in the tax area is being drafted. “Sport is one of the few areas where we are not divided, where we are happy for the successes and good results of others. Our wish is to transfer such an atmosphere and such an approach from sport to other areas as well. You athletes are a proof that where there is a will, there is a way, even in the most difficult situations.”

The Prime Minister's address was followed by a speech by judoka Tina Trstenjak, the winner of the silver medal in the 63 kg category at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
