The Local Self-Government Directorate is responsible for the systemic regulation of the organisation and operation of Slovenian municipalities. The Directorate prepares legislative solutions in the field of local self-government; in cases where the content relates to the operation of municipalities, it participates in the drafting of relevant legislation in this field that is within the competence of other ministries.

It advises municipal bodies on the implementation of their tasks and responsibilities. It is responsible for the implementation of the European Charter of Local Self-Government and legislation in the field of the organisation, operation and financing of municipalities.
