The Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development is an independent government office. Its main tasks include monitoring and analysing trends and developments in economic, social and environmental terms, monitoring and analysing compliance with the national development objectives, preparing annual development reports, preparing macroeconomic forecasts and other technical background documents (for budgetary planning and economic policy measures), analysing productivity and competitiveness in the role of a National Productivity Board, and performing research work.

With regard to technical and methodological issues, the Institute is independent in applying analytical and forecasting methodologies and interpreting the results. The Institute performs analytical and research work, informs the government about documents in its portfolio, participates in the work of inter-ministerial and governmental bodies, cooperates with ministries and other government offices and with domestic and foreign institutions, publishes the results of its work, and ensures the informing of the public. It also cooperates with the Fiscal Council.
