Slovenia Weekly: In the company of culture

On 1 December, Slovenia has assumed its second one-month presidency of the UN Security Council for this term. One of the signature events during this period will be the Security Council's first visit to Syria. Slovenia will conclude its two-year term on the Security Council at the end of the month.

Slovenia first assumed the role of presidency of the UN Security Council in its second term in September last year and, as then, chose Leadership for Peace as the central theme for the open debate. Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, underlined on this opportunity: "As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Slovenia has demonstrated courage and responsibility. It has already made its mark with its principled and unifying stance within the Council, and I believe that this will be consolidated further with the second Presidency."

For the 26th year in a row, Slovenians celebrate the birthday of their greatest poet France Prešeren in the company of culture. Since 2000, cultural institutions in Slovenia have commemorated the anniversary of the birth of the poet France Prešeren by opening their doors wide and welcoming visitors to their free events – this year, there are as many as 290 free cultural events organised by 130 cultural institutions in 70 locations across the country.
