Prime Minister Robert Golob will host the MED9 leaders and invited high-level guests, including the King Abdullah II of Jordan and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, on 20 October 2025 on the Slovenian coast.

The summit discussions will focus on exchanging views on current European topics and challenges in the region, with particular emphasis on strengthening the competitiveness of the economy and addressing the situation in the Middle East, especially the intolerable conditions in Gaza. A joint declaration by the MED9 leaders is also expected to be adopted at the meeting.

In 2025, the Republic of Slovenia assumed the presidency of the MED9, an informal group of like-minded Mediterranean EU Member States (Cyprus, France, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Spain and Portugal) established to promote closer cooperation and coordination on current matters in the European Union and the Mediterranean.

During its presidency, Slovenia is enhancing MED9’s influence in EU foreign policy and advocating for the enlargement to the Western Balkans. Economic resilience is being strengthened through green transition initiatives, energy connectivity and climate-related solutions. Youth empowerment is also being promoted. Furthermore, a key focus is on strengthening partnerships with the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood and supporting the initiatives of the Union for the Mediterranean.
