Slovenia Weekly: More Europe

On 9 May, the EU Member States celebrate Europe Day, commemorating the start of European integration more than 70 years ago. In their speeches and statements, European leaders, including Slovenia’s, focused on the achievements, responsibilities and future of the EU, particularly in the light of climate change and the war in Ukraine.

On the occasion of Europe Day, the Slovenian Prime Minister, Robert Golob, and the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, stressed the importance of the EU's unity. Prime Minister Golob said that Europe Day is a day of unity, friendship, solidarity and the success of constructive integration for the benefit of all.

The Prime Minister said that European countries are stronger together and can or must do more together. Minister Fajon also stressed that the answer to all the crises the EU has faced in recent years has always been more Europe, more cooperation, more unity and, above all, solidarity and understanding.

Both noted the benefits of EU membership for Slovenia. However, as the Prime Minister said, EU membership also entails responsibilities, such as proactive and constructive participation in EU policymaking and the protection of fundamental values and freedoms. These, Prime Minister Golob said, are still under threat on a daily basis, even though we live in the 21st century.
