Slovenia will celebrate Independence and Unity Day on Sunday. 31 years ago, we voted overwhelmingly in a plebiscite for an independent Slovenia. At the main national ceremony yesterday, the Prime Minister, who was the keynote speaker, stressed that Slovenia's independence was an innovation, as no other nation had gained independence, defended itself against aggression and stood on its own feet in exactly the same way. "Our independence, with the plebiscite as a fundamental, central political act and the successful defence of the new state, was unique, original, special, never before carried out in a similar way," the Prime Minister stressed.

May the festive days ahead be marked in this spirit: peaceful, special and original.
