One apple a day ...

Did you have a good and healthy breakfast today? Made with locally sourced products? Like children in our schools and kindergartens? A piece of black bread, butter, honey, milk and an apple.

Every year, on the 3rd Friday in November, Slovenia celebrates Slovenian Food Day, when all schools and kindergartens serve the traditional Slovenian breakfast. Slovenian Food Day actively encourages the public to re-think their eating and shopping habits and motivates them to include locally produced and processed food into daily meals as much as possible.

Children also learn about this in the Traditional Slovenian Breakfast project. Bread, butter, honey, milk and an apple or other fruit - all of Slovenian origin - are synonymous with the Traditional Slovenian Breakfast project, which this year is running under the slogan "Breakfast with fruit - a great day!". The project has been adopted by Slovenian kindergartens, primary schools and many other institutions across Slovenia and around the world, and aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular breakfast for a healthy lifestyle. It's been 11years since Slovenia started this project and now the first generations of young adults are already passing this awareness on to the next generations.

Food was not on the agenda of the Slovenian Presidency this week, but let's hope European decision-makers had at least some time to grab an apple or two between the meetings.
