Slovenia Weekly: First aid

In days before the Glasgow Climate Conference, Globescan published a survey conducted in 18 countries. It showed that the public awareness of the importance of the current situation is growing when it comes to climate changes. Almost 60 % believe that heads of state need to set ambitious targets and only 34 % continue to advocate gradual action. Halfway through COP26, the conference only proves that global awareness on this topic has never been stronger.

In global terms, the EU's targets and, therefore, Slovenia's targets are very high. If all countries had such, we would most likely be able to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels. Slovenia today also joined the Alliance to Strengthen the Coal Phase-out and endorsed the Declaration on Public Support for a Clean Energy Transition at COP26.

Following the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, a number of bilateral meetings between the EU and other countries and groups of countries, including China, Japan, the USA, Australia, Russia and the group of least developed countries (LDCs), are taking place under the leadership of the Slovenian Presidency.

And even if public life in Slovenia - as in many other parts of Europe - may slow down in the coming weeks due to the sharp increase in the epidemic, Glasgow shows that the world is moving on despite the pandemic. We have no choice, the Earth must be saved!
