Slovenia Weekly: We're in space!

Thursday was a historic day not only for Slovenian but also for European science, as the first two Slovenian satellites, called Nemo HD and Trisat, were launched into space. This first launch of Slovenian satellites placed Slovenia among the countries with operational satellites in orbit. The launch was a milestone not only for Slovenian science, as it was also the first time such a large number of small satellites had been launched into space at the same time on a European rocket. The head of the Slovenian delegation emphasised that Slovenia had caught the right wave of development, confirming that we chose the correct strategy of development in the field of microsatellites, which was set more than ten years ago. The launch has placed Slovenia in the group of pioneers in the European Space Agency.

Proof that nothing is impossible and that not even the sky is the limit is a piece of rock form the Moon that was exhibited in Slovenia this week. It was brought back to Earth as part of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. According to the Director of the Herman Potočnik Noordung Center of Space Technologies in Vitanje, where the Moon rock is currently being exhibited, this is one of the most valuable items ever to have been displayed in Slovenia in its entire museum history.

The attractive exhibit is a result of fruitful collaboration with Nasa and the American embassy. According to the US Ambassador, who has put great effort into bringing American exhibits to Slovenia, never in her wildest dreams had she imagined that one day she would bring a piece of the Moon to our country, which only goes to show that no goal is ever unattainable.
