Dr Žiga Žarnić, permanent representative
Žiga Žarnić has over 20 years of experience in international economic policy, multilateral cooperation, and data-based policy making. He holds a Doctorate in Economics from KU Leuven and has held senior positions at the OECD, International Monetary Fund, and European Commission, as well as at leading research institutions including the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the LICOS Centre for Institutions and Economic Performance.
At the OECD, IMF and European Commission, he has led country reviews, policy frameworks and analytical reports on competitiveness, sustainability, well-being and digital transformation for high-level engagement with Ministers and Heads of Delegation. He represented the OECD and supported high-level ministerial engagement in OECD Ministerial Council Meetings (MCM), and G20, G7 and APEC processes under successive presidencies on issues related to economic growth, energy, inequalities and other global priorities.
Throughout his career, he has worked closely with business and employer associations and coalitions, fostering public-private dialogue and supporting the responsible adoption of new technologies, sustainable business practices and long-term competitiveness. Mr Žarnić has also contributed to Slovenia's economic governance through the Strategic Council for Macroeconomic Affairs, advising the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance on investment, fiscal policy and economic growth.
