Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Slovenia to Ireland
Matej Marn

Matej Marn assumed his duties as Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Slovenia to Ireland in October 2025. With over two decades of experience in the Slovenian diplomatic service, he has represented the country at the highest levels of multilateral diplomacy and played a core role in contributing to the strategic coordination of Slovenia’s foreign and security policy.

Born in 1977, Matej Marn graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana in 2001 and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia that same year.

During Slovenia’s first Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2008, he served as Head of the Department for the EU and Deputy Head of the Group responsible for the Presidency Programme. He subsequently held the position of Political Director at the Ministry until 2012, when he was posted to the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the United Nations in New York. There, he served first as Chargé d’Affaires and later as Deputy Permanent Representative until 2016.

Upon his return to Ljubljana, he was appointed Director-General of the Directorate for Common Foreign and Security Policy and as Political Director. From December 2019 to March 2020, he served as State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He later led the Department for Security Policy as Director until September 2022.

From mid-2022, he led the Task Force for the United Nations Security Council, overseeing Slovenia’s successful campaign for election to a non-permanent seat on the Council for the 2024–2025 term. He then continued to lead the Task Force, coordinating Slovenia’s engagement in the Security Council until his appointment as Ambassador-designate to Ireland.
