United Nations Day: Slovenia for effective multilateralism that respects its own rules and delivers results
Slovenia remains firmly committed to effective multilateralism, with the UN at its core. Since joining 34 years ago, Slovenia has consistently demonstrated its dedication as a responsible member, actively participating in the UN system and its various bodies, serving on the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2026–2028 and on the UNICEF Executive Board for the period 2025–2027.
“Slovenia is committed to a rules-based international order and to the consistent and non-selective implementation of international law,” stresses Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tone Kajzer. Over the past eight decades, the UN has shaped the standards of international and humanitarian law, environmental commitments and a system for protecting human rights, all based on the fundamental values of modern democracy: freedom, equality and justice. These are the values that Slovenia lives by and hopes will become a reality for all of humanity. The UN remains an indispensable and key element of predictability in international relations.
Slovenia supports the ongoing reform processes within the UN. Whether institutional, financial or substantive, reforms require political will, dialogue, strengthened trust and a willingness to cooperate. We need an organisation that is responsive, transparent and effective, and that is prepared for the future.
