Minister Tone Kajzer with the diplomatic corps in Koroška: strengthening links between heritage and the economy

Tone Kajzer, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, accompanied by his spouse, hosted a group of foreign ambassadors accredited to Slovenia on a diplomatic excursion to the Koroška region. The visit aimed to showcase the region’s natural, cultural and economic diversity and to foster direct links between Koroška's business community and international partners.

"I was born in this region. The landscape and people of Koroška have shaped who I am, endowing me with me the determination characteristic of Koroška that keeps me going, whatever the challenge," Minister Kajzer said at the start of the trip. He added, "Koroška is sometimes described as Slovenia’s best-kept secret. I hope that, by the end of this day, it will be a little less of a secret to you and that you will understand why those of us who come from here speak of it with such affection."

The ambassadors, representing 39 countries, were acquainted with the region's mining, cultural and culinary heritage, with visits to the Mežica Mine and the Povh Mill. The programme showcased the region’s rich history and tourist attractions while providing insight into its contemporary economic landscape.

At the Narodni dom Mežica (Mežica National Hall), they met Katja Pokeržnik, Director of the Koroška Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and representatives of several companies from the region: TAB, SIJ Metal Ravne, Cablex, Bijol, Ferolin, KO-SI, Gumarstvo Šrajner and Hotel Wada/Rimski Vrelec. The companies presented their activities, their presence in foreign markets and their priorities for further international cooperation, including the search for new business partners, exploring new markets and attracting investors. The meeting provided an opportunity for direct networking between business representatives and ambassadors, with a view to developing further business contacts. All were later received by the Mayor of the Municipality of Mežica, Mark Maze.

Minister Kajzer commented: "Koroška has long been outward-looking, even before terms such as ’internationalisation’ and ’global value chains’ became widely used. Today, you have met companies operating in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, metals, automotive components, energy and tourism. Some have already established a strong presence abroad, while others are seeking new markets, partners or investors. I hope you have gained an understanding of the region’s practical expertise, adaptability and ambition. This is precisely one of the reasons why I wanted to bring you here."

A parallel programme was organised for the spouses and partners of ambassadors, offering an introduction to Koroška’s local cuisine, traditional skills and rural heritage. In cooperation with local stakeholders, participants tasted traditional regional dishes and local produce, the knowledge and preparation of which has been passed down through generations.

The visit offered an insight into Koroška as a region with a strong industrial heritage, a growing tourism sector and businesses seeking opportunities for growth beyond Slovenia’s borders. It also enabled ambassadors to establish direct contacts with local businesses and other regional stakeholders, helping to lay the foundations for future cooperation.
