First roundtable discussion on the revision of the Veterinary Practice Act held
Ms. Andreja Bizjak, Acting Director General of the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection, pointed out that more than half of the provisions of the current Veterinary Practice Act have been repealed or otherwise ceased to apply. As a result, the Act, adopted 25 years ago, no longer provides an adequate legal framework for the effective regulation of the veterinary sector.
“We need a comprehensive Act that addresses current needs and ensures a high level of protection of animal health and welfare and food safety”, Ms. Bizjak stressed. She added that the new legislation should take into account developments in the veterinary science and practice, new challenges facing the veterinary sector, the requirements of the EU law, and the needs of those using veterinary services.
During the discussion, the veterinary professionals welcomed the initiative to revise the Act and involve them in the drafting process.
The Administration plans to hold two more roundtable discussions on the revision of the Act by the end of the year. The discussions and the issues raised will provide a basis for drafting the new Act, followed by broader consultation with the professional community.
